Stay out of sun, public told, as heat set to hit 35C

The sun sets over London's skyline

The UK is bracing itself for another day of scorching temperatures as a heatwave continues to hit the country.

"Where these occur expect torrential downpours with a much as 30 mm of rainfall in 1 hour and 60 mm in 3 hours".

Warnings to stay out of the sun during the heatwave have been criticised by tourism bosses.

"Temperatures will be even higher than the last two days, reaching highs of 31-32C, with overnight temperatures not lower than 15C". Keep your home as cool as possible - shading windows and shutting them during the day may help.

The Met Office said Sunday's 27C in the North-East will be followed by 23C highs rising to 25C or so - nearly 10C above average - on Thursday and Friday for Edinburgh and with 35C is on the cards in England by the weekend.

Nurses have warned that some hospital wards have reached more than 30C, leading to patients and relatives passing out or vomiting.

Temperatures will be very warm or hot, locally very hot in the east.

The hottest July day on record saw the mercury hit 36.7C at Heathrow on July 1 2015.

Paul Gundersen, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "The heatwave conditions will continue across much of England, with temperatures into the mid to high-30s Celsius in many places from the Midlands eastwards on Thursday and Friday and it's possible that we could break the all-time United Kingdom record of 38.5 C if conditions all come together".

Ladbrokes spokesperson Alex Apati said: "The sun just won't go away and the odds suggest we'll see record-breaking temperatures over the next few weeks".

Meanwhile, the heatwave has also seen a day's play lost in the India warm-up match against Essex.

The amber heatwave alert will be in place until Friday, when rain and thundery showers are forecast in parts of the UK.

Although there is no official definition of a "heatwave" in the United Kingdom, the term can be used to describe an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year.
