Fiji, Kiwis impress as Aussies crash out

Rugby World Cup Sevens Perry Baker sparkles as big guns dominate day one

Spain defeated Fiji 19-12 in the opening match of the tournament to set up a Championship quarterfinal with Australia, the Olympic and HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens series champions getting their campaign up and running against debutantes Papua New Guinea.

Eight top seeds were assured of places in the last 16 of the competition due to their placing in the World Rugby Sevens Series, with the remaining teams forced to play a qualifier to progress.

New Zealand dominated the first half and took the lead when Blyde crossed in the corner for an unconverted score to make it 5-0.

The New Zealand Herald reported that a Kiwi double-double - and two victory hakas - stole the show at the Sevens World Cup.

In contrast to previous years, where teams played group games before the knockout stage, this year's event is a single elimination tournament.

New Zealand seized control of the decider to lead 15-0 at halftime thanks to tries from Michaela Blyde, Portia Woodman and Tyla Nathan-Wong, the latter from a quick tap with time up on the clock.

"We're pretty happy with ourselves".

In the women's tournament meanwhile, New Zealand marked themselves out as the team to beat with two emphatic wins, piling up more than 100 points without conceding a point in wins over Mexico and Ireland.

Their toughest game came in the semi-finals earlier Saturday, when they were pushed all the way in a 26-21 win over the United States.

Men's action is scheduled to conclude on Sunday (July 22).

"When a Fijian team gets that sort of momentum they're very hard to beat", said Fiji's satisfied coach Gareth Baber.

Two tries in the second spell to Kurt Baker and Joe Ravouvou were enough to seal the 12-7 victory and secure a semi final berth.

The England boys would win the match.

The Blitzboks have never won in Hong Kong and the World Cup has also eluded them - maybe the time is now for them to break that drought.

South Africa also impressed in defeating Ireland 45-7, with Siviwe Soyizwapi scoring four tries and Justin Geduld bagging a brace.
