Supergirl season 4 casts Nicole Maines as TV's first trans superhero

‘Supergirl’ Adds Nicole Maines As Transgender Superhero; April Parker Jones & David Ajala Also Cast – Comic-Con

Maines's previous acting credit was on the United States of America network series Royal Pains.

Maines hopes her role in the DC show will provide a positive impact and the "right representation" for the trans community. Coming Soon reports that there are new additions to the series, including the transgender superhero Dreamer, played by Nicole Maines. The casting and the character is important, especially to Maines who told the audience at the SDCC panel that it was "fitting" that trans kids finally have their own superhero to look up to.

Maines said, "I'm beyond thrilled to be able to do that in a supersuit!"

Previously, it had been revealed that Supergirl was adding to its series-regular cast Jesse Rath as the Legion of Super Heroes' Brianiac-5 and Sam Witwer as Agent Liberty. Per a description, Maines' character is "the newest addition to the CatCo reporting team".

Maines also talked about the recent controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson, who bowed out of playing a transgender man in a feature filming after her casting sparked an intense backlash online.

"We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are". "We've seen that. But trans people have lives outside of our gender identity and our transness". There will apparently be many parallels between her journey to self-discovery and destiny fulfillment with Supergirl herself - we'll just have to wait and see what those similarities will be. "I think she's going to be a lot of fun, and I think folks are really going to like her".

"Now, it's very hopeful and relieving to watch creators and writers and directors and casting offices stepping up to put trans people in trans roles, so we can portray ourselves and we can start to disprove some of those stereotypes about us".

Maines is joined in Season 4 by fellow newcomers April Parker Jones (Jericho, The Last Ship) as Colonel Haley and David Ajala (Doctor Who, The Dark Knight) as Manchester Black.

Melissa Benoist plays the superheroine of the title in "Supergirl", which premiered on the CW in 2015 and has aired 65 episodes across its first three seasons.
