Tommy Fleetwood is ready to take the Claret Jug, says Rory McIlroy

Tiger Woods

Better yet, he didn't hurt anyone in the gallery.

Tiger Woods is all taped up and ready to go at Carnoustie.

Woods had a bit of an up-and-down round, but finished dead even.

Finau is tied for sixth place, two shots behind the leaders, Americans Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner.

"Through 15 holes I could have been two, three under and even a few lower", said Dunne, who bogeyed the first and ninth but made tap-in birdies at the second and 12th. It wasn't enough to turn the grass from brown to green, just enough to be a nuisance playing in rain gear, with towels hanging from the inside of umbrellas to stay dry and putting surfaces that were slightly slower.

His five-under-par 66 came thanks to a consistent display with the occasional gutsy call, most notably a bold tee-shot on six that handed him an eagle and set him on his way.

Nobody apparently got injured, and Woods went on to make a bogey on the hole, so we should all be thankful that wasn't a whole lot worse.

McIlroy spoke nearly as well as he played in trying conditions at the Scottish course and he has served notice to the field that he is hunting his fifth Major. "It grabbed the shaft and smothered it", he said.

But despite holding back the temptation to hit long, he ended with the same score, a promising consistency emerging with two days to go.

He still made bogey. He had a chance to salvage his round late until a bogey on the 17th hole.

Woods answered with a pair of birdies, and it was give-and-take the rest of the way.

The 14-time major champion's birdie putt from 8 feet at the 18th rolled just past the right edge. Woods had another 71 and was six shots behind, with 28 players between him and the lead.

Discussing this year's Open as his best chance for another major, Woods said: "As far as long term, certainly, I would say yes because of the fact that you don't have to be long to play on a links-style golf course, and look what Tom (Watson) did at Turnberry at 59, I believe he was", Woods said. "Today wasn't quite as good, but I finally birdied the par 5".

Sky will be showing the entire thing live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Golf, starting with the first tee time at 6.30am on Thursday and ending with the lifting of the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon. This is his 12th tournament of the year, and Woods has been among the top 10 just once - the Valspar Championship in March - going into the weekend. He left it well short, behind a bunker, and had to play a pitch over the top of the bunker and onto the green.
