Man dies after eating a bad oyster in Sarasota

Мужчина умер от плотоядной бактерии поев устриц

A Sarasota man died from the bacteria Vibrio Vulnificus after eating raw oysters.

The report said the Sarasota man died from a gastro-intestinal illness. A department spokesman tells us the man also had underlying medical conditions. The department of health website says this is the first confirmed case and death of Vibrio vulnificus in Sarasota County this year. The county did not have any vibrio cases previous year but there were confirmed cases and one death in 2016.

Authorities have so far refused to reveal the man's identity and the name of the restaurant.

Though such infections are rare-only about 205 USA cases per year, according to the CDC-the Florida Department of Health notes that exposure is most common from May to October, when the saltwater the bacteria inhabits is warmest. The bacterium usually thrives in warm and blackish sea water.

"If you have a wound (including cuts and scrapes), avoid contact with brackish or saltwater or cover the wound with a waterproof bandage if there's a possibility it could come into contact with brackish or salt water, raw seafood, or raw seafood juices", the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

"The summer time, May, June July there are no R's in there the water's warmer so the bacteria that's potentially hazardous to some people is more prevalent", Alton said. The county, according to the department, didn't have any cases or deaths in 2017, and three confirmed cases and one death in 2016. Most cases are unpleasant but resolve within a few days, but rare infections from the species Vibrio vulnificus can cause a "flesh-eating" or necrotizing fasciitis condition that kills up to 30% of those infected. If the infection is contracted through the skin, it can lead to skin breakdown and ulcers.

Though sometimes labeled a "flesh-eating" bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus can not attack healthy skin, the Sun-Sentinel reported. People with weakened immune systems are more at risk.

Hurricane floodwaters after Harvey resulted in at least one fatality from flesh-eating bacteria and there were several Vibrio deaths after Katrina.
