Cats Movie Cast Revealed to Include Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and More

Taylor Swift showing theatrical flair at Wembley Stadium recently is about to go full Broadway in a film version of

Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") is directing the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage evergreen, and it's expected to begin shooting later this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It's no surprise, then, that Hollywood is bringing Cats to the big screen - and the first additions to the cast are a suitably starry bunch.

Based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, Cats is the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history and is renowned for its frenetic visuals and music, and abundance of Lycra and leg-warmers that was the look of the day when it debuted in the '80s.

Hudson - who won an Oscar in 2007 for her breakout role in Dreamgirls - is set to take on the prominent role of Grizabella, also known as "The Glamour Cat", and will be lending her powerhouse vocals of the musical's standard Memory.

Hooper is no stranger to movie musicals. Lloyd Webber is reportedly writing a new song for the character Victoria, a white kitten, which will surely be eligible for an Academy Award, so if Taylor Swift is looking to nab an Oscar, expect her to land that role.

"Cats" is one of the most successful musicals in history, enjoying long runs both in London's West End and on Broadway. And as for Ian McKellen, we trust him with almost any fantastical adventure.

The film will be produced by Working Title. Lee Hall ('Billy Elliott') is penning the script. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
