Trump meets Theresa May, promptly says Boris Johnson would be ‘great PM’

PALACE, England, July 12 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Theresa May made a determined pitch to Donald Trump for a post-Brexit trade deal with the United States on his first trip to Britain on Thursday, but the US president nearly immediately cast doubts on her hopes.

"If they do a deal like that, it will most likely, because we'll be dealing with the European Union, instead of dealing with the United Kingdom, so it will probably kill the deal, if they do a deal like that, their trade deal with the USA will probably not be made", Mr. Trump said.

London, Jul 12 Donald Trump arrives in Britain today for his first visit as United States president, flying into a whirlwind of protests against him and political turmoil over Brexit.

Boris Johnson missed out on a seat at the table by resigning as foreign secretary on Monday in protest at Mrs May's Brexit policy, though Mr Trump has said he might try to speak to him during his visit.

Asked about Trump's remarks while also in Brussels, May said: "What we are doing is delivering on the vote of the British people... that's what our proposal does".

While President Donald Trump met with Prime Minister Theresa May Friday morning, First Lady Melania Trump set out for London to meet up with May's husband, Philip May, at London's Royal Hospital for an event with British schoolchildren and veterans. I think they agree with me on immigration.

The United States president also criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who he said had "done a very bad job on terrorism" by allowing so many migrants to come to the city.

"We have enough difficulty with the European Union", he said.

Mr Trump's interview has already shocked many MPs, with some calling him "repulsive" and questioning why he should meet the Queen during his visit.

He backed down over the threats when other leaders agreed to increase defence spending "like they never have before" and described himself as a "very stable genius" over the deal.

He added, "If they do that, their trade deal with the USA will probably not be made because we have enough difficulty with the European Union".

But the plan has infuriated fervent Brexit supporters in Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party, who think it would limit Britain's ability to strike new trade deals around the world.

On Friday (Jul 13), he will join Prime Minister Theresa May at Chequers before meeting the Queen at Windsor Castle, however, his arrival has not been welcomed by all. Johnson said the agreement was "suffocating" the Brexit dream.

Thousands are expected to protest across the capital, heavily led by Owen Jones" "Stop Trump' rally, which will go ahead on Friday July 13.

"I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the disgusting things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in".

"She should negotiate the best way she knows how", Trump continued.

Trump arrived in Britain after a fraught North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels where he piled pressure on allies to double their defence spending. His late mother hailed from Scotland, and he owns two luxury golf courses there.

Mrs May will be looking to improve her often publicly strained relationship with the United States president as she pushes for a post-Brexit trade deal with America.

In the busy south London neighborhood of Brixton, Victor Greetham, who runs a jazz bar, said he hasn't been to a demonstration since he protested against the Iraq War in 2003, but he planned to attend one of the protests against Trump's visit.
