Police Clash With Residents After Fatal Shooting; ‘We’re Tired; You’re Killing Us’

Protests, clashes after Chicago man is killed by police

Chicago police on Sunday released body camera footage of officers shooting dead a black man as he reached for his concealed handgun, hoping to quell two days of violent and peaceful protests that had branded the incident a case of police brutality. Four people were arrested and four officers were treated for minor injuries.

The shooting Saturday evening in the Grand Crossing neighbourhood on the city's South Side sparked a clash between angry residents and baton-wielding officers. Video circulating on social media show tense confrontations between police and protesters. The third officer to be shot was also listed in stable condition. Police say a weapon and several ammo mags were found on him.

The man became combative, pushed the officers' arms away and flailed his arms, trying to escape, Waller said. Police recovered a weapon at the scene, but the slain man did not fire his gun at officers, Waller said. A protest and march Sunday after the videos release was calmer, with some demonstrators holding a moment of silence for Augustus, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Chicago's Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said police began following a man in the South Shore neighborhood on Saturday "who they thought might be armed".

"If we expect neighborhoods to cooperate with police, we need to do our part to remain transparent", Johnson said.

"The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m.at 2098 E. 71st St., and it took police about five hours to bring things under control". Some witnesses dispute the account, one of whom describes a police officer who "jumped out of her auto and had a gun", stopping the man as he was crossing the street. Video showed several police officers and protesters shoving each other. Worshippers at the United Believers Community Church were urged to leave the area as soon as possible while officers were searching for the suspect. At about 6:30 p.m., three to four officers on foot saw the man "exhibiting characteristics of an armed person" and went to question him, according to tweet by Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Dozens of people showed up, and at some point the officers had to push the crowd back. Augustus spins away and runs into the street, where he reaches for a gun from his waistband.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said in a statement to WLS that there would be a "thorough, objective and unbiased investigation and requests the public's patience and cooperation". The officer who shot him, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with murder and is awaiting trial. McDonald's death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms created to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable for excesses.
