Tennis Podcast, Wimbledon 2018: Tipping point reached after marathon day At Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic

It will go down as one of the greatest matches in tennis history and a huge moment in the career of Novak Djokovic as he beat world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in a five hour and 15 minutes epic to return to a Grand Slam final for the first time in almost two years.

Anderson had a break point at 7-7 and at 10-10, but he missed the first one as Isner hit an ace and the second one as he erred on a backhand passing shot.

Novak Djokovic is one match away from a first Grand Slam title since 2016 after an epic five-set win over Rafael Nadal in their delayed Wimbledon semi-final.

He's the first South African to make a Wimbledon final since 1921 and the oldest first-time Wimbledon finalist in the Open Era at age 32.

Now the No. 8 seed Anderson will face Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.

While Anderson-Isner was mostly a serving duel with a few longer rallies thrown in, Djokovic and Nadal repeatedly slugged it out from the baseline, chasing each other around the court and coming up with spectacular winners from every corner.

"I don't really know what to say right now", a clearly drained Anderson said immediately after the match.

Djokovic set himself up to take the first set with strong service games, facing no break points and broke in the seventh game before sealing it with a forehand victor. It had started with Centre Court's retractable roof closed and so concluded that way, too, even though there was no hint of rain.

Finally, however, Anderson's grit, athleticism and stamina - and one brilliant bout of ambidextrousness - paid off, and he clinched the match after playing the equivalent of nine sets in total, to win 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 26-24.

Djokovic and Nadal will be able to play on Centre Court until the curfew of 11pm. He stayed the course incredibly well, played very well.

Djokovic and Nadal have five Wimbledon titles between them and met in the 2011 final, while Anderson and Isner had never made the semifinals before. Isner practically owns the double-digit-fifth-set-clash zone, and is best known for the "endless match" which lasted 11 hours 5 minutes across three days at the 2010 Wimbledon.

Two hours and two sets in, they were even at one apiece, each via tiebreaker, with zero service breaks, only the very occasional extended point and aces by the dozen.

Anderson proposed going to a tiebreak if a fifth set gets to 12-all.

The first teaser that this game was not going to be short or straightforward came in just the third game when Isner put pressure on Anderson's serve by taking the ball early. "They've been watching us for over six hours". Isner took that set on his third chance, when Anderson flubbed a forehand.

The No. 8 seed Anderson eliminated eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in a 13-11 fifth set in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

"This is wonderful. It's by far the best grand slam I've ever played in my career, and I've been playing for 11 years".
