Serena Williams issues defiant statement of intent over Margaret Court record

Angelique Kerber in action

Serena Williams has reached her 10th final at Wimbledon, 30th at all Grand Slam tournaments - and first since having a baby a little more than 10 months ago.

"It's insane. I don't even know how to feel, you know, because literally, didn't expect to do this well in my fourth tournament back", said Williams who returned to tournament play in March after a 13-month absence.

Williams duly raced to victory, delighting the packed Centre Court crowd with a display that confirms the 36-year-old is nearing her best form at the flawless moment. I had to have multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it to be honest.

"But as I said in the last couple years, I don't want to limit myself".

The physical rigours of playing at this level less than 10 months after giving birth and a surgeries are unimaginable by most, but the mental challenge has been just as daunting.

"This was not inevitable for me", Williams said after the match, which took 70 minutes to complete.

Whatever the duo is doing, it's working - Williams will face Angelique Kerber in the finals on Saturday.

In Saturday's final, Williams, 36, will compete against another German player, No. 11 seed Angelique Kerber, herself a two-time Grand Slam champion.

"I don't think she's physically got the fitness that she had but she's the best competitor in the game, she's got the best all-round shots in the game with the most power", Cash told BBC Sport.

"Mostly, the hardest part was mentally letting go of a lot of mommy things in order to fully be 100 percent into tennis", Williams said. "This is Serena, and she does the unimaginable, the unpredictable", Evert said.

Margaret Court - who leads the all-time standings with 24 major singles titles - used to be known as "The Arm" because of her unusual physical dimensions: her racket arm was said to be three inches longer than that of a normal woman of her height.

But Serena had already made her mark on the tournament this year before she ever stepped foot on Centre Court.

Wimbledon is just Serena's fourth tournament since returning to the tour in March. What she's seeded is not going to determine her winning this event.

Kerber is one of five women that has defeated Williams in a Grand Slam final.

"She's a fighter. She's a champion". It was tough. There was a time where I could barely walk to my mailbox. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold.

"It's very impressive. I haven't even been to the gym, let alone played tennis".

There have been five different winners of the five majors since then - two of whom were ranked 47th (Jelena Ostapenko, 2017 French Open) and 83rd (Sloane Stephens, 2017 US Open) at the time - while the same number of players have held the number one ranking, including Kerber. I think it doesn't matter against who she is playing. That was also the year the German was the runner-up at Wimbledon, losing to Serena Williams in the title match.

This time, she looked towards her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, family and friends quite calmly, put a hand to her heart and smiled.
