Russian Federation v Croatia quarter-final

Croatia defeat Russia 4-3 on penalties to reach 2018 World Cup semifinal

Russia's fairytale run at the 2018 World Cup has finally ended after they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Croatia in the last quarter final match on Saturday.

Denis Cheryshev scored a brilliant opener in the first half but just eight minutes later former Leicester City striker Andrej Kramarić headed the Croatians level.

He added that he did not see consistency in Croatia's game as they "looked good for three games but played worse against Denmark".

"One of the most important tasks for our team is to contain Modric, because he is a leading player in the Croatian team".

It was a dramatic end to a see-saw game that finished 1-1 after the regulation 90 minutes, and 2-2 after extra-time.

Russian Federation beat Spain 4-3 and Croatia beat Denmark 3-2 on penalties in the round of 16.

Croatia defender Domagoj Vida put them 2-1 ahead from a Luka Modric corner in the first period of extra time but Russia's Mario Fernandes headed an equaliser with five minutes remaining, much to the delight of the partisan crowd at the Fisht Stadium. According to a statement from the Federation Internationale de Football Association press service, the fine is related to an incident in which members of the Croatian national team were seen drinking "non-authorized beverage products", that is, drinks that were not officially approved as part of the sponsorship deal for the World Cup. The English team defeated Sweden 2-0.

The country selected 11 host cities to be the venues for the matches of the 2018 World Cup and they are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara.
