Former UCLA basketball player reportedly dead after police standoff

Authorities said a man fired at police and barricaded himself in a Sherman Oaks Calif. home on Friday

According to authorities, LAPD was dispatched to a residence at Sherman Oaks after Honeycutt's mother called around 5 p.m. PT on Friday claiming her son was "acting erratically".

Although officers could not communicate with the man after the shooting, they believe the man is still alive, the report said. At approximately 2:30am SWAT located an unresponsive male inside the residence. Once inside they found Honeycutt completely unresponsive with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

LAPD later tweeted that the SWAT team intervened and the player was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured and it's unknown if the suspect was struck.

The forward spent two seasons with UCLA men's basketball between the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons, during which he was named to the Pac-10 all-freshman and Pac-10 first team. He declared for the National Basketball Association after his sophomore campaign, getting drafted by the NBA's Sacramento Kings.

He spent a season playing for the D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers before moving overseas to play for the Ironi Nes Ziona team in the Israeli Super League. Euroleague Basketball offers its condolences to Mr. Honeycutt's family, friends, teammates, coaches and the many fans who enjoyed his performances with both Khimki and Anadolu Efes Istanbul.

Rest in Peace, Tyler.

After being waived by the Rockets, Honeycutt went to play in the Euroleagues with BC Khimki in Russian Federation and Anadolu Efes in Turkey.
