US tariffs take effect, China warns of 'counterattack'

China EU USA trade war alliance Donald Trump President Xi

Beijing insists it's the injured party.

Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng said on Thursday that the proposed United States tariffs would hit many American and foreign companies operating in China and disrupt their supplies of components and assembly work.

In the meantime, Brazil, the world's top exporter, will likely pick up the slack, although a trade association warned on Thursday the South American country may need to import the oilseed from the United States this year to satisfy demand from local processors.

But in response to a 25% tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods imposed by the Trump administration, Beijing retaliated by slapping tariffs worth $34 billion on 545 American goods - including soybeans.

American companies doing business in China are particularly anxious. I fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs selling into the European Union, which has hurt us badly on trade, down to $151 Billion.

And Beijing's tactics may go beyond tariffs to include arbitrary quarantines and a costly uptick in customs inspections.

In the short term, analysts said, the moves may disrupt markets and hinder trade in both countries.

The company wants customers to split the cost of the tariff hike, but few are willing, said Tong.

In May, the figure swelled to US$24.6 billion, which was nearly all of China's total surplus of $24.9 billion, compared to the same period past year.

34 and then you have another 16 in two weeks, and then, as you know, we have 200 billion in abeyance, and then after the 200 billion we have 300 billion in abeyance.

"In a gaggle aboard Air Force One Thursday, Trump all but confirmed that he was following through with his threats, ticking through the additional tariffs he planned to levy after the initial salvo kicked in: ".

One study said as many as 400,000 jobs could be lost.

That would bring the total of targeted Chinese goods to potentially $550 billion - more than the $506 billion in goods that China shipped to the United States previous year.

The world's two largest economies, the U.S. and China, are locked in a worsening trade battle that could have unexpected side effects on the global economy.

Carmaker BMW said it could not absorb all of the 25% tariff on the cars it exports to China from a plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina and would have to raise prices.

The tariffs target a broad spectrum of Chinese goods - such as passenger vehicles, radio transmitters, aircraft parts and computer hard drives - from industries Washington says have benefited from unfair trade practices.

Trump has already imposed tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, solar panels and washing machines.

Mr Trump has railed against Beijing for intellectual property theft and barriers to entry for USA businesses and a $375 billion United States trade deficit with China.

'There should be no doubting Beijing's resolve, ' the newspaper said.

China lowered commitments to buy 366,000 metric tons of US soybeans in the season that ends August 31 and cut purchases by 66,000 tons in the following year.

China's soymeal futures fell more than 2 percent on Friday afternoon before recovering most of those losses, amid market uncertainty over whether China had implemented tariffs on a list of U.S. goods, including soybeans. The damage could also spread to other economies, hurting business confidence and prompting companies to delay investments.

It is unclear how long the trade war will last.

"We urge the two governments to come back to the negotiation table", said Zarit.

On the Chinese side, fallout from the first round of tariffs was seen as tough but manageable.

"I think it's true to say that a lot of the pessimism has already been factored in over the past couple of weeks, with share prices gradually going down as the realisation has set in that apart from being a war of words, this does now seem to be a trade war", he added.
