Pompeo heading to North Korea as regime shows little progress towards denuclearization

Kim Jong Un visits the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill

Sung Kim, the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines and a veteran of nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang, met with North Korean officials on Sunday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

Trump's national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday he expects Pompeo to discuss with North Korea a plan to dismantle its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs in a year.

According to the State Department, senior USA diplomat Sung Kim, who held negotiations with North Korean officials before the Singapore summit, also travelled to a Korean border village on Sunday to restart talks with the North.

Asked about the USA diplomat's visit, Kim Eui-keum, a spokesman for South Korea's Blue House, said that they were aware of the meeting but that it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Citing satellite imagery, a respected monitoring group last month said operations and infrastructure works were continuing at the North's main Yongbyon nuclear site, while the Trump administration itself has cited "an unusual and extraordinary threat" from North Korea's nuclear arsenal to extend decade-long sanctions.

Some US media are reporting that Pyongyang is continuing its nuclear and missile developments after the Singapore summit. "We're not going to provide a timeline for that", Nauert said.

The current view on Kim directly addresses his intentions rather than the overall capabilities of his weapons programs.

The secretary of state may press North Korea to allow the recovery of some of the nearly 7,700 soldiers still unaccounted for after the 1950-53 Korean War, the most concrete agreement to come out of Trump-Kim summit. Over the weekend, a USA envoy met with the North Koreans at the DMZ.

The images show that the exterior of the plant was being finished around the time of the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore.

According to reports in South Korea, Sung Kim met with North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choi Sun Hee at Panmunjom for an hour and a half Sunday.

A series of news reports, based on anonymous intelligence officials and satellite images, have added fodder to criticism that President Donald Trump gave away too much too soon in his unprecedented summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

There is no word on whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, an avid basketball fan, will attend any of the games. "I think they want to do it", he told Fox's Sunday Morning Futures in an interview that aired Sunday.

But that vague statement bypassed crucial details about how and when North Korea would proceed with its denuclearization pledge. "The realistic goals Pompeo can achieve from his visit would be making meetings with North Korean officials a regular thing and ensuring the return of the remains of United States soldiers killed during the Korean War, which could help maintain the momentum of dialogue". "They didn't even commit to freezing the program", he said. The only opposition party that includes fake news, complains.

A strategy by David Albright at the Institute for Science and International Security suggests the US needs to get Kim to disclose a complete list of all his nuclear program sites and materials, including uranium and plutonium. "We are going to pursue this, and we will see what happens".

Prior to the summit, North Korea already took some of the most important first steps outlined by a white paper titled "A Technically-informed Roadmap for North Korea's Denuclearization".
