Trump Talks with Mexico’s President-Elect on Border, NAFTA

Andrés Manuel López Obrador won the Mexican presidency with a large margin on Sunday.

The 64-year-old candidate said fighting corruption would be the top goal of his government.

His political party, Morena, and its allies could win majorities in both chambers of Congress, according to projections based on results still trickling in.

An exit poll by Parmetira had Lopez Obrador winning with between 53 to 59 percent of the vote, far ahead of his two main rivals. It is also the first time Mexicans living overseas can vote for down ballot races like senators. Ricardo Anaya, leader of a right-left coalition, had 27 percent and Jose Antonio Meade, the candidate of the incumbent PRI party, was on 18 percent.

The ruling PRI, or Institutional Revolution Part, is expected to suffer losses in this election.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has cast his vote in elections to choose his successor.

Mexico's newly elected leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has pledged to "reach an understanding" with US President Donald Trump at a time when both countries need consensus on everything from trade to security and migration.

We also must wait and see what type of relationship the United State and Mexico will eventually have with Trump and AMLO as their presidents.

Lopez Obrador, or AMLO, and Corbyn are reported to be personal friends and have participated together in political conferences and seminars. Known by his initials, Amlo, Lopez Obrador has vowed to bring profound change to the country and fight corruption. "I told him a number of years ago when I saw him campaigning for a different race, frankly, a different year, a different race, I said he'll be someday he's going to be the President of Mexico".

The President of the United States took to Twitter to congratulate Lopez Obrador with the election victory, saying that he was looking "very much forward to working with him".

He has also made tall promises, from eradicating corruption to ending crime and increasing employment, while keeping taxes low. It was the biggest share of the vote in a Mexican presidential election since the early 1980s and gave him a strong mandate to address Mexico's domestic problems and face external challenges such as USA tariffs. But Duncan also said that many people are unsure of how Lopez Obrador will be able to provide what he has promised.

In the past, Lopez Obrador has offered criticism to the shift in USA stance on immigration and trade.

That violence was on many minds as television stations carried live images of Lopez Obrador weaving through Mexico City's notoriously chaotic traffic in the front passenger seat of a compact auto that was at least five years old.

"The people are fed up", Zuniga said.

"The fundamental problem is that this country has a huge demand for drugs", she said.

Despite his affable approach towards Mexico's northern neighbor, Lopez Obrador's victory did little for the Peso.

O'Grady told Perino that an area where Mexico has lacked progress is in its rule of law, and more specifically law enforcement. News reports say that more than 100 politicians were killed in the campaign leading up to Sunday's vote.

Carlos Urzua, Lopez Obrador's pick to be his finance minister when he takes office on December 1, told Reuters on Monday that the new government will aim to reform the pension system and to reduce costs at Pemex during its six-year term.

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
