North Korea is not denuclearizing. Yet

Kim reportedly keeping nuclear program alive, but Bolton claims they will dismantle within a year

"What I can tell you is that we're continuing to make progress", she said.

But it's still unclear whether Pyongyang would agree to that.

Bolton's remarks on CBS's "Face the Nation" appeared to be the first time the Trump administration had publicly suggested a timeline for North Korea to fulfill the commitment Kim made at the summit with Trump for the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

Despite Donald Trump's claims that Kim Jong Un would denuclearize, his own Defense Intelligence Agency reportedly believes that North Korea has no intention of ending its nuclear program.

The State Department said Pompeo would head from Pyongyang to Tokyo on Saturday, where he would discuss North Korean denuclearization with Japanese and South Korean leaders.

Pompeo's visit comes days after the first in-person meeting between the US and North Korea over the weekend.

White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday the bulk of North Korea's weapons programs could be dismantled within a year, "if they have the strategic decision already made to do that". "We aren't going to confirm or deny any intelligence reports".

North Korea will have to back up its words with verifiable actions, Bolton said.

Meanwhile, top officials from the USA and North Korea are following up on the commitments reached at the June 12 summit in Singapore.

The surprising news comes just two days after NBC News reported that North Korea is ramping up its nuclear development at "secret sites" instead of shutting down its nuclear operations.

The State Department's refusal to specify a timeframe could be meant to lower expectations for the outcome of Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang, experts say. That is where all six of North Korea's nuclear tests had been carried out. Only global inspectors, allowed inside the facilities by mutual agreement, could do that. Kim may want to give up his weapons but the generals may not.

During his annual new year's speech, the North Korean dictator ordered his country's missile and nuclear weapons research sectors to mass produce ballistic missiles.

That's far from Mr. Trump's confident tone arriving home from the summit, when he tweeted, "There is no longer a nuclear threat". This would put South Korea's security and its alliance with the United States "at a crossroads between life and death", said Kim Taewoo, a former president of the Korea Institute of National Unification.
