Clearwater Coast Guard crews assist in rescue after boat explodes in Bahamas

People on a neighboring boat attempted to rescue injured passengers from the explosion off Exuma in the Bahamas on Saturday

Stefanie's mother Stacey is also injured with two fractured legs.

A fundraising campaign to raise $100,000 to help members of a Rutland family injured in an explosion on a boat in the Bahamas has exceeded its goal.

The boat was full of tourists, including Maleka Jackson and her husband Tyrane Jackson, when it burst into flames off the island of Exuma on Saturday.

News outlets report video filmed from a nearby boat showed tourists jumping into the water in an attempt to rescue passengers in the burning boat. "Between the two of them, I can say they've been to China, Japan, parts of South America".

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, transporting injured Americans to St. Pete using an HC-130 Hercules helicopter from its Clearwater station. She and her husband were vacationing in the Bahamas to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary, he said.

Stepdad Paul Bender and sister Brooke suffered cuts and bruises, George said, according to ABC.

Cooper said others were treated at Princess Margaret Hospital in the Bahamian capital of Nassau, including the boat's captain, who is also the owner of 4 C's Adventures tour company.

John Iman, who was on the boat with Sheila Jones and her son, Haiden Jones, who is dating Stefanie Schaffer's sister Brooke, told ABC News that the explosion happened about three minutes into the trip. Schaffer will need spinal surgery for an L1 lumbar disk fracture, her family said.

Officials from the Bahama's police, fire, and civil aviation departments are conducting an investigation into the explosion.

According to a Facebook post by George Schaffer, the family will soon be airlifted to the US. Castleton University posted to Facebook that it was "shocked and saddened to hear that Stephanie Schaffer and her family were involved in such a traffic accident".
