Heavy rains in Mumbai live updates Part of bridge collapses at least five injured

Upon hearing the marvel of Sawant, Union Railways Miniter Piyush Goyal rewarded the motorman with Rs 5 lakh.

The Gokhale bridge that connects Andheri East and Andheri West in suburban Mumbai, collapsed on the tracks near Andheri railway station. Sawant saw the foot over bridge collapsing from a distance and quickly applied the emergency brakes.

Prashant Ghag, who works in a media house at Fort said, "When I reached Borivili to board a Churchgate bound train, I came to know that all the lines of Western Railway have come to halt". The injured have been rushed to the hospital. Do not think anyone is trapped under debris. Six people have reportedly been injured.

Mumbai has been witnessing constant heavy rains for over 18 hours now and according to reports rainfall has crossed 90mm in some parts of the city.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam and NCP Mumbai President Sachin Ahir unanimously demanded a full audit of all 250-plus bridges, skywalks, flyovers, FOBs, and ROBs crossing the suburban railway network and a white paper on the safety status.

Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO), Central Railway said that trains on Central Railway's main, harbour and transharbour lines are running normally.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety will investigate the incident which has triggered a blame-game between the WR and the BMC. Instead, commuters travelling from Andheri East to West are advised to follow the Bisleri junction - Teli Galli - Surve Chowk - Andheri subway - SV Road route, the Mumbai Traffic Control Branch said. In a tweet, Mumbai Police said the trains on Western line were affected, with traffic below the bridge stopped for now.
