Report Multiple People Shot at Annapolis Newspaper

A gunman fired through a glass door at a newspaper in the Maryland capital of Annapolis and sprayed the newsroom with gunfire on Thursday, killing at least five people and injuring several others, authorities said.

Speaking on the shootout at the Capital Gazette office, Arundel County police which has arrested one suspect in the case said that they were still interrogating the alleged shooter and were trying to find out the motive, aim behind this attack.

The Capital Gazette reported police officers had recovered what appeared to be an "explosive device", and had "tactically secured" the building. His weapon was discovered on the ground near him.

"Can't say much more and don't want to declare anyone dead", he wrote.

In a series of tweets, Davis later wrote that a "single shooter shot multiple people", inside the office, "some of whom are dead".

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

A massive police presence could be seen outside the office of the paper, which is owned by the Baltimore Sun.

Madi Alexander, a data reporter for Bloomberg, told our media partner The Baltimore Sun that she felt an overwhelming need to help after hearing about the tragic shooting.

Another police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said at an afternoon news conference, "We did have an active shooter situation inside that building".

Police said they were on the scene within a minute and engaged the suspect, who they took into custody.

Capital Gazette Communications' staff includes three people on the executive staff as well as seven editors, according to CapitalGazette.com.

Gov. Hogan issued a statement saying he was "absolutely devastated" at the tragedy.

Liam Stack, a New York Times politics reporter, tweeted a photo of police guarding the entrance of his newspaper in response to the Maryland shooting.

Altomare was asked why the Capital Gazette had not pursued criminal charges after the suspect made online threats in 2013.

Police said earlier reports about the suspect mutilating his fingers in an attempt to alter his fingerprints are not confirmed.

Davis said he and others were still hiding when the shooter stopped firing. Emergency crews are on scene assisting victims and police are clearing the building.
