Emirates flights to and from Bali delayed due to volcanic activity

Passengers in Perth arrive at the airport to find their flights are cancelled

The airline says flight NZ245 from Auckland to Bali, due to depart today, has been cancelled as a result of volcanic activity.

The global airport on the Indonesian resort island of Bali reopened on Friday afternoon after a almost 12-hour closure due to a volcanic ash threat that disrupted travel plans for thousands.

The Ngurah Rai airport began operating at 2.30 pm local time (12 pm Indian Standard Time), about 12 hours after it was shut.

Over 300 flights have been canceled, according to airport authorities, impacting the travel plans of thousands of people.

Eruptions lasted for nearly a year, with the volcano falling silent again until September 2017 when several hundred earthquakes struck locally.

The volcano, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta, last had a major eruption in 1963, killing about 1,100 people.

The only three flights on Friday morning to Bali from Melbourne were cancelled.

Mount Agung in northeastern Bali has been rumbling to life intermittently since late past year and it began belching smoke and ash again on Thursday.

However, Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said Agung's danger status had not changed and flights were not in danger.

AirAsia cancelled the 6.30pm and 8.00pm flights between Denpasar and Perth, as well as the 7.30pm Denpasar to Perth flight amid fears the ash could affect the aircraft engines. "We hoped that we could leave this morning, but the airport is closed", she said.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 250 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Among the airlines serving the resort island, Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya and Indonesia Air Asia said they were working to help stranded passengers. Government seismologists monitor more than 120 active volcanoes.

"We are monitoring the advice from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre and our team of senior pilots and meteorologists will make an assessment when flights can be resumed", it reads.
