Trump to Harley-Davidson: 'We won’t forget, and neither will your customers'

Let them eat pain Trump voters need to feel the effects of the trade war they begged for

The tweet was Trump's latest in what has become a days-long effort to pressure Harley-Davidson to halt its plan to build some of its bikes overseas in response to new tariffs from Europe.

President Donald Trump's tirade against motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson represents a rather stunning reversal of his previous praise for the company.

The company also said it would move some motorcycle production overseas.

Trump himself once said, "Harley-Davidson is a true American icon, one of the greats". He added: "I've done so much for you, and then this".

Harley's announcement of the Thailand plant came months after Trump pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which would have lowered import tariffs on the company's bikes in some of the fastest-growing motorcycle markets in Asia.

Trump says on Twitter, "We won't forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!"

The president had earlier warned that any shift in production "will be the beginning of the end" for the company. Harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into US without paying a big tax! "I was the one that explained to Harley about 100 per cent tax in India. and I got it down to a much lower number. which is, I think, 50 per cent, which is far too much, but they were paying 100 per cent".

"Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold in the US will continue to be made in the US", Pflughoeft said.

Harley-Davidson announced the closing of a factory in Missouri in January, but the reason for that was slumping domestic sales numbers. The company doesn't have specific information on where production for the European Union will take place, he said. He incorrectly said Harley was moving production to Asia from the US, when in fact the expansion in Thailand was unrelated to the closing in Missouri. The EU's tariffs on motorcycles were put in place as a response to Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

Harley already has assembly plants in India and Brazil.

"Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to USA -based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally", the company said Monday. "Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse", Trump said.

Harley-Davidson executives met with President Trump at the White House a year ago after President Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.
