Mom shoots man who lured daughter online, tried to break into home

A New Zealand man flew to the U.S. state of Virginia and was shot after trying to break into the home of a teenage girl whom he met online, police say.

The sheriff says Skinner methodically planned his trip to the USA, though he was uninvited, according to the paper.

The mom, who has not been named, sprang into action after Skinner began banging on the door of her home with a brick.

According to a timeline developed by sheriff's investigators, Skinner took a flight from Auckland, New Zealand, at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday to Sydney, Australia, and from there boarded a flight at 9:25 Los Angeles.

Skinner then reappeared on the back deck and again tried to get inside by throwing a landscaping brick through a glass door. Officials said Skinner was struck in the neck and remains hospitalized.

Skinner will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon with intent to commit a serious crime, the sheriff said.

The mother warned him she had a gun, and after he allegedly broke through the glass and reached inside to unlock the door, she fired twice.

Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew said the man was also armed with a knife, duct tape and pepper spray.

"The lady and her family members are the victims".

Agnew said after he arrived at the scene he went next door and found the mother and two daughters "visibly upset".

Mr Skinner flew from New Zealand via Sydney, before travelling by bus to Richmond, Virginia, which is 175km south of the United States capital. They did not answer the door - the mother told police she doesn't answer the door during the day, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

The sheriff added that Skinner's arrival to the USA was totally unexpected, according to Stuff.

The mother warned Skinner several times that she had a gun.

Skinner ran from the scene and collapsed in the next-door neighbor's yard.

"They are pursuing federal charges related to contacting" the girl, the sheriff said.

He decided to make the journey after having online communication through Discord, an online app meant to connect people to discuss gaming, with a 14-year-old girl at the Goochland home.

Police were contacted after seeing a man in black trying to break into the house.

"The younger daughter attempted to stop communications with him he was opening other accounts in an attempt to keep communications open and she did not cooperate with him", Agnew said.

Skinner is now in a hospital in the nearby city of Richmond, under guard.

A friend described Skinner as an anti-social loner, and said he'd claimed he had been traveling to America's west coast to meet online gamer friends.

"If you have just her Discord handle you're not going to know where she lives, but if she had linked her Facebook to Discord, you get her Discord handle and see her Facebook and on her Facebook it says Maggie VCU", Nagarajan said.
