Coric dethrones Federer at Halle Open

Borna Coric explains a clear plan to upset Roger Federer

Before heading into the Wimbledon, 20-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer will be looking to add another title to his kitty while facing Croatian Borna Coric in the final of the Halle Open here on Sunday.

Cilic saved a match point at 4-5 in the second set and then won six consecutive points from 4-1 down in the tiebreaker to level, before going on to win his second title at the Wimbledon warmup.

The Halle Open victory helped Borna Coric gain 13 places to his career best ranking of 21.

The defeat meant that Rafa Nadal will return to the top of the world rankings on Monday.

It was Federer's first defeat on grass since a second-round loss to German Tommy Haas at Stuttgart in June a year ago. Federer served at 77% and he fired 18 aces and many more service winners, keeping the points on his racquet and dominating at the net as well with his clinical volleys that Christophe had no answer for. However, Coric surprised everyone with this resilience and better game play.

Few had expected Federer to be stopped during the grass-court season, particularly after he picked up his 98th title in Stuttgart just a week ago following a near three-month period of rest since the Miami Open.

Both defeats were painful for Cilic, who lost a final set tie-break against Feliciano Lopez at Queen's and broke down in tears during his injury-plagued Wimbledon loss to Roger Federer.

However, the 21-year-old lost his only grass court match this summer to Coric in Halle.

Djokovic is at least back in the top 20 unlike 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon champion Murray who is ranked at 156.
