BREAKING: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old socialist, topples powerful incumbent Joe Crowley

While Ocasio-Cortez still has to beat Republican Anthony Pappas in November's general election to make it to Congress, it should be an easy victory.

Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old former Bernie Sanders organizer, crushed Joe Crowley, the number 4-ranked Democrat in the House, on Tuesday night. When she breezes to victory over token Republican opposition in November, she will be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney fended off the insurgent campaign of Suraj Patel with 58 percent of the vote.

Higher Heights for America, which encourages black women to run for elected office, is helping to rally support for Pressley among African American women around the country. And of the 293 women who have run or are running as challengers for the House or the Senate, 34 are taking on Democratic incumbents, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

But Democrats are at least nominally uncomfortable with this idea, both because it is corrupt and because for more than 80 years, Democrats have understood themselves to be the party of the people, the party of progress and equality.

She raised more small-dollar donations than any other New York City congressional candidate.

Bill Lipton, Director of the New York Working Families Party-which endorsed Crowley-said in a statement endorsing Ocasio-Cortez that "the old rules about what's possible have been proven wrong, and we're delighted".

And while Trump cheered Crowley's downfall, so did liberal leaders who backed Ocasio-Cortez.

Democratic Party leaders typically plead pragmatism on Big Money.

"The minute you lose that connection you're at risk in this business", he said. "You can't rely on where the energy has been for years".

In Colorado, Representative Jared Polis won the primary for governor. "They can lock down every big donor and every key endorsement and they can still be beaten, because people still vote-and there is still some democracy left".

But others continue to advocate a Clinton-esque, centrist approach.

These races echoed the divide in the Democratic Party that was highlighted by the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, a breach which has only intensified since the 2016 election.

But he's not surprised a socialist platform appeals to voters in New York's 14th District. Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, she said she knew she could connect with the district, which includes Queens and part of the Bronx.
