Xherdan Shaqiri responded by saying "it's just emotion" when he was questioned about the way he celebrated his late victor in Switzerland's 2-1 victory over Serbia.

Shaqiri, who sent a fine effort against the post shortly after the equaliser, then completed the turnaround in the 90th minute as a Swiss counter-attack saw him receive the ball from substitute Mario Gavranovic, burst forward and slot coolly past Vladimir Stojkovic.

Xhaka and Shaqiri are both ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, which broke away from Serbia in war in 1999 and declared independence nearly a decade later but is not recognised by Serbia.

Meanwhile, Stephan Lichtsteiner has become the third Swiss player to be investigated over a goal celebration. Xhaka's brother Taulant plays for Albania's national side.

Federation Internationale de Football Association outlaws all political messages or symbols in stadiums and the three players could have been banned for up to two games if they were found to have breached rules.

While Kosovo are recognised by UEFA, Serbia do not view them as an independent state, something which has left the relationship between the two countries strained.

Granit Xhaka of Switzerland celebrates after scoring his team's first goal during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group E match between Serbia and Switzerland at Kaliningrad Stadium on June 22, 2018, in Kaliningrad, Russia.

"I have no doubt that you can feel patriotic emotions for the land which has taken you in without forgetting your roots", he said.

If FIFA finds the three guilty of provoking the fans, they will each be banned for two games.

Shaqiri was born in Kosovo and plays with the Kosovan flag stitched into his boots.

Xhara and Shaqiri could face suspension for celebrations that "provoke the general public". "You should always show respect". "It was a provocation, we were playing against Switzerland, not Kosovo", said official Jovan Surbatovic.

In further fallout from the Group E game, FIFA said Sunday it had opened disciplinary cases against Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic and federation president Slavisa Kokeza for comments made after the game.

"The most glaring poor decision was not awarding Serbia a penalty for a foul on Mitrovic with the score 1-1, and awarding the spot kick could have turned the match our way", added the statement. Brazil advances with a win or a draw.
