Apple working on noise cancelling AirPods, over the ear headphones

Bloomberg: Premium AirPods, next-gen HomePod and new over-ear Apple headphones coming in 2019

It's the third-generation that the Bloomberg article focuses on though, claiming that it will bring with it a raft of new features. A report by Bloomberg suggests that apart from the addition of features to the AirPods, Apple will also be launching studio-quality over-ear headphones, as well as an update to it's relatively unsuccessful Google Home and Amazon Echo competitor, the HomePod.

For the AirPods, Apple could release two models next year: One would be a refreshed version of its current $159 (£159) model, while the other would be a slightly pricier iteration. They'll utilize Apple branding and be positioned as a higher-end alternative to the company's Beats line.

You've probably seen people walking around with Apple's AirPods sticking our of their ears and wondered how someone doesn't just lose the wireless earbuds.

While none of this is unexpected as such, the timescales may be of note. The new AirPods will also have increased Bluetooth range and could come with a heart-rate monitor like the Apple Watch.

The Apple Inc. division responsible for accessories such as the AirPods wireless earbuds recorded $12.9 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year.

Additionally, Apple is rumored to be working on a wireless charging case that works with the upcoming AirPower charger.

For these over-ear headphones, Apple is said to have discussed working with Tymphany, a Primax Electronics subsidiary that makes consumer and professional audio systems.

Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

There's likely to be another pair of headphones on the way from Apple. What direction Apple will take with the HomePod 2 is yet to be determined.

The report mentions that Apple is working on a follow-up to its HomePod speaker as well, but it does not mention any details about the device beyond the fact that it may arrive "as early as next year". It's possible that Apple could switch away from Inventec for the new model. Production hasn't started, and the deal isn't finalized.
