Why Melania Trump's jacket has sparked outrage

Explanation Officials from the Upbring New Hope Children's Center spoke to the First Lady before she toured the facility to meet children

When it says "I really don't care, do u?" and is worn by First Lady Melania Trump on a surprise visit to a Texas shelter for illegal immigrant children, driving the media insane.

Images from the Associated Press showed that the first lady wore the jacket when boarding a plane at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland as she was on her way to Texas to visit the US-Mexico border.

When is a jacket not just a jacket?

Melania Trump sparked controversy as she donned the jacket saying: "I really don't care, do u" (sic).

"She wanted to see everything for herself", Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told reporters travelling with her.

She is pictured wearing the coat while getting out of her vehicle at Andrews Air Force Base but the jacket was removed and not seen again once she disembarked in Texas. It's a ZARA jacket that retails for about $40.

Left-leaning criticism isn't necessarily a concern for the first lady.

Then there's the most obvious and widespread interpretation: that it was a message to migrant families and people who support their plight.

"It is my hope that Members of Congress will finally reach across the aisle and work together to solve this problem with common sense immigration reform that secures our borders and keeps families together", she added. Last August, the media and public discussed the high-heeled shoes she wore to fly to Texas to view Hurricane Harvey destruction. While she may not troll the media in the same way as her husband does, she knows how to dress to get a reaction.

President Trump commended Melania for making the trip.

After the White House announced its "zero-tolerance" policy in April, over 2,000 children have been separated from their parents.

The youthful jacket sharply contrasts with the first lady's typically bold, foreign-flavoured wardrobe. Her husband, President Barack Obama, was the talk of a 24-hour news cycle when he donned a tan suit in 2014 for a media briefing. "Do U?" on her trip to visit a shelter for illegal child migrants in Texas.

Hours after the photo was taken, Grisham issued a second statement on her official Twitter account blasting the media.

She was greeted by Upbring CEO Dr. Kirk Senske, who outlined Upbring's five markers of success: safety, life skills, health, education and vocation.
