Time Magazine Lays Child Migrant Crisis At President Trump’s Feet

The Story Behind the Viral Photo of a Crying Child at the Border

"I took a knee and had very few frames of that moment before it was over, and she picked up her daughter, and they were rushed into the van and all taken away".

The image has been seen and shared by millions, as Trump's controversial policy of taking asylum-seeking children from their families and holding them in US foster care-while their mothers and fathers are jailed and criminally prosecuted-draws fierce criticism.

TIME magazine puts the issue of family separation squarely at President Donald Trump's feet in a cover released Thursday.

The issue of the magazine will hit newsstands July 2, by then over a week after Trump signed an executive order to end the separations of children and their parents who have been detained for illegally crossing the us border.

Moore, who is a Getty Images special correspondent and senior staff reporter and was interviewed by TIME, did note the importance of the preserving the integrity of the original photo.

Central American asylum seekers wait for transport while being detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents near the U.S. -Mexico border on June 12 in McAllen. In Moore´s words: "All I wanted to do was pick her up. But on the other, I don't take great exception to them doing an illustration", he said. The image of the crying toddler was taken from one of those photos.

Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order that halts the practice of separating families, but it doesn't end "zero tolerance".

"Now, I regret saying that because I don't know that everything is going to be OK", Moore said. That bright light you see on their faces coming from US Border Patrol.

While the separation policy has officially been rolled back, how and when the government plans to reunite those children with their parents is unclear. Children can not follow their family members or guardians into custody, so U.S. guidelines mandate that those children be separated - often from their parents.
