Google is investing $550 million into Chinese e-commerce site JD.com

Google makes $550M strategic investment in Chinese e-commerce firm JD.com

Jianwen Liao, chief strategy officer, JD.com, said the deal "opens a new chapter" in the company's history, "This partnership with Google opens up a broad range of possibilities to offer a superior retail experience to consumers throughout the world".

The deal gives Google a path into the Chinese e-commerce market and does the same for JD.com in the USA and Europe. JD.com is locked in a heated battle for customers with China's largest e-retailer, Alibaba. This could help JD.com expand beyond its base in China and Southeast Asia and establish a meaningful presence in US and European markets. The Google-JD.com partnership could help JD.com keep an open channel to the US and would give Google a foothold in China, where it's had trouble conducting business as most of its services are blocked because it won't censor results. The service displays items at the top of Google's search pages, allowing users to compare prices across different websites.

In recent months, Google has been making inroads back into the Chinese market through various deals and investments.

For its part, Google will received more than 27 million shares in JD.com, CNBC reports.

Google's analytics and market research information will be paired with JD.com's experience in managing inventory of physical goods and handling logistics.

The JD.com investment is being made by the operating unit of Google rather than one of parent company Alphabet's investment vehicles.
