Sri Lankan captain Chandimal charged for ball-tampering

2nd Test Day 2 Devon Smith Battles For Windies On Soggy Slow Day

"The ICC can confirm the match officials in the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka changed the ball and awarded 5 penalty runs to West Indies", the ICC tweeted.

Play started two hours late on Saturday after the Sri Lankans, led by Chandimal, refused to take the field following a decision by umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould to charge the tourists with altering the state of the ball during the latter stages of Friday's play.

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the umpires laid the charge on Chandimal after reviewing footage of day two, where they found evidence of a foreign substance being applied to the ball.

Sri Lanka refused to take to the field after umpires instructed that the ball be changed - with a new one to be selected by the Windies - before the start of play.

Broadcast visuals of the Sri Lanka dressing room showed coach Chandika Hathurusingha, captain Dinesh Chandimal and team manager Asanka Gurusinha in animated discussion with match referee Javagal Srinath.

After initially appearing to be prepared to resume the match, the Sri Lankan cricketers then hesitated even as they were making their way out to the middle.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was at the forefront of a protest against his side altering the condition of the ball.

Earlier in the day, Chandimal was charged by the global cricket body in the aftermath of the high-voltage drama that took place during the third day of the Test.

"SLC shall take all necessary steps to defend any player, in the event any unwarranted allegation is brought against a member of the team", they further added. So maybe Gould was just being over-cautious.

Opening batsman Cameron Bancroft, the player caught on camera applying sandpaper to the ball, was banned for nine months.

Steve Smith, along with David Warner, was handed a one-year ban from both domestic and global cricket by Cricket Australia while batsman Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension for their involvement in the incident.

West Indies won the first test by 226 runs. The first and only time a match has been forfeited in the history of Test cricket was in 2006, after Pakistan were penalised five runs for ball tampering in the fourth Test against England at The Oval.

At stumps on day two the West Indies were 118 for 2 in reply to Sri Lanka's first-innings score of 253 all out.

Lahiru Kumara was again their most outstanding bowler, constantly threatening with his pace and aggression to finish with figures of four for 86 and lift his wicket tally to 11 halfway through the series.
