Almost 2000 minors split from parents at border in 6 weeks

DHS: Nearly 2,000 Children Taken Under Trump’s New Border Policy

President Donald Trump has tried to blame Democrats, who hold no levers of power in the government today, for a situation that has sparked fury and a national debate over the moral implications of his hard-line approach to immigration enforcement.

The Trump administration's "zero tolerance" border security approach has seen thousands of adults criminally prosecuted for illegally entering the USA, meaning their children are separated from their guardians and classified as "unaccompanied minors". But it is the immigration issue, with its heartrending stories of children being forcibly separated from parents, that seized the country. The official tally of separations is now almost 4,000 children, not including March and the beginning of April 2018. "I will tell you that nobody likes this policy", Conway said on "Meet the Press" Sunday. "I certainly don't want anybody to use these kids as leverage", she said.

Democrats have countered that no law requires the government to separate children from their parents.

For the immigration law system to function, the United States doesn't have to shift between detaining families and separating them. We need to work with those countries in Central America from which these families are coming to end the gang violence that is encouraging them to leave.

About 2,000 children had been separated from their families over a six-week period ending in May, administration officials said Friday.

Donald Trump continues trying to paint his extremely controversial policy of separating immigrant children from their parents and holding them a jail-like facilities as somehow the fault of Democrats.

USA officials have suggested that this number will continue to rise, with the Border Patrol chief for the Rio Grande Valley, the busiest stretch of the Southwest border, estimating that the number of affected families could double, according to The Washington Post.

"If you cross this border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you". "We are not there yet, but that is our intent".

Nearly 2,000 children have reportedly been separated from their families at the border over six weeks under the policy. Implementing the policy exclusively for deterrence purposes, however, has been ruled illegal by USA judges.

HHS is tasked with caring for "unaccompanied alien children", which by law is any minor that arrives at the border without parents or relatives, or for whom loved ones were not "available to provide care and physical custody".

The following is a transcript of the interview with Collins that aired Sunday, June 17, 2018, on "Face the Nation". Sessions openly admitted when announcing the policy that children would be ripped away from their parents.

He said that border agents and administration should "use their conscience", while policymakers should do some "soul searching".

Collins also called on her colleagues in Washington to take up legislation to address immigration reform and border security.

In an election year in which Democrats appear to have an advantage on voter enthusiasm, Republicans can ill afford to alienate any voters this fall, particularly their most passionate supporters.

Democrats have accused Trump of effectively turning the children into political hostages to secure stricter immigration measures, such as funding for a U.S. -Mexico border wall.

"We ran on a policy - very simply - stop mass illegal immigration and limit legal immigration, get our sovereignty back to help our workers, and so he went to a zero tolerance policy", Bannon said.
