'Very Unfair!': Trump Slams 'Tough Sentence' for Ex-Campaign Chair Paul Manafort

Paul Manafort arrives for a hearing at District Court in Washington D.C. on Friday. A judge ordered him to jail ahead of his trial in connection with alleged witness tampering

US District Judge Amy Berman made the decision after prosecutors working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the Russian Federation probe, alleged that Manafort and one of his associates had tried to tamper with witnesses in the case, US media reports. She said she should not have to draft a court order spelling out the entire criminal code for him to avoid violations. (Manafort is accused of witness tampering by phone and text.) "This is not middle school", she said.

Prosecutors say the two men tried to get two witnesses to say that lobbying work on behalf of Ukraine and carried out by clandestinely paid former politicians occurred only in Europe and not the US, a contention the witnesses said they knew was false.

"Trump doesn't have the luxury of waiting to see what happens with Manafort's trial, because Manafort is likely weighing whether to flip as we speak", Cramer said.

Ordering Manafort into custody compounds the legal pressure he is facing and represents another step down from the position he once enjoyed as Trump's campaign boss and, before that, a longtime influence-broker.

"You have abused the trust placed in you six months ago", she said. "I can't take his cell phone", Jackson said.

Senate Judiciary Committee member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) has concluded there is "panic" surrounding President Donald Trump as speculation grows that former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and personal lawyer Michael Cohen are both likely to "flip" on Trump.

No one on the campaign, including Manafort, has been charged with a crime directly related to Russian attempts to sway the election. "I feel badly for some people, because they've gone back 12 years to find things about somebody, and I don't think it's right".

At the White House on Friday, Trump told reporters that Manafort worked for him for "a very short period of time".

Mueller, whose investigation has overshadowed Trump's presidency, is looking into whether any Trump campaign associates coordinated with Russian Federation and if Trump unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe.

He pleaded not guilty on the charges imposed on him and had been on home confinement in Virginia.

Manafort, 69, had been under house detention while awaiting trial later this year in Washington and in Virginia. Chuck Todd and Pete Williams speculate that this could force Manafort to flip on Trump, but that's a pretty weak speculation. While Manafort claims they only worked in Europe, prosecutors say they also lobbied in the USA without registering - a violation of federal law. "If I tell him not to call 56 witnesses, will he call the 57th?"

"[Manafort] is a guy who is tampering with witnesses in his own case", he said, adding that the former partner at Black, Manafort & Stone embodies "sleaze, corruption and the worst kind of stuff".

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Mueller's office has described Kilimnik as a Russian intelligence asset who was active through the 2016 election. "The danger is that Mr. Manafort will continue to commit crimes", argued prosecutor Greg Andres.
