U.S. Open: Phil Mickelson melts down, hits still-rolling ball

See Phil Mickelson's bizarre meltdown on the green at the U.S. Open

It was a childish display from a five-time major victor celebrating his 48th birthday.

Mickelson, who turned 48 years old Saturday, may have damaged his reputation for some avid fans after his moment of annoyance.

His score at 13 was first posted as an eight, then a nine and finally a 10 that left him 10-over for his round and 16-over for the tournament. However, because he hit a moving ball, Mickelson was assessed a two-stroke penalty.

"I don't mean disrespect by anybody, I know it's a two-shot penalty, and at that time I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over, I took the 2-shot penalty and moved on", he explained. "I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display", Mickelson said. After racing his bogey putt past the hole, he bizarrely and inexplicably jogged down after his ball before putting it back up the hill while it was still rolling.

World number one Johnson was the only man under par through 36 holes, leading the tournament with a four-under total of 136.

"No question it was going to go down into the same spot behind the bunker". The action stunned the commentators, and Mickelson's comeback put lipped out of the hole. He had those four consecutive bogeys before a par at the 12th. Gotten to that point where you've just had enough of the course or setup?

Mickelson, who will have an early tee time, thinks a similar charge isn't out of the realm of possibility. I have had multiple times where I've wanted to do that.
