Two Kansas City Sheriff's Deputies Dead Following Shooting

Second deputy dies in shooting in Kansas

Deputy Theresa King, 44, died from her injuries Saturday after being shot in the line of duty in Kansas City on Friday.

The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said the Kansas City Police Department is investigating the incident and the accompanying surveillance footage.

Kansas City Police Chief Terry Zeigler did not share details about the shooting and told reporters that investigators are still speaking with witnesses.

Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Theresa King, 44, was shot and killed after being overpowered by an inmate on Friday, June 15, 2018.

King served the sheriff's department for 13 years, while Rohrer stayed with the department for seven years. King, who was initially listed in critical condition, died shortly after midnight on Saturday. Both had families; King had two grown children and a young daughter and Rohrer had two young children.

Zeigler said the authorities were withholding the inmate's name until he's been formally charged, which is expected to happen next week.

She and Alvey said now is a time for the community to try to bond and heal, which can start at a candlelight vigil scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday in front of City Hall, 701 North 7th St.in downtown Kansas City, Kan.

"This is a courthouse building, there is video". Kelli Bailiff said at a news conference.

'Our hearts break for our brothers and sisters at Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office as well as for the loved ones of the deputies shot today, one of whom has died.

Bailiff said the investigation into what happened is continuing, but the officers followed the established protocol for transporting inmates.

Two years ago, two police officers were fatally shot within three months of each other in Kansas City, the county seat of Wyandotte County.

The investigation is being handled by the Kansas City Police Department. Police have not identified the suspect.

The year before, Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Wood was shot at a convenience store but survived.

Gov Jeff Colyer was briefed on the incident as he arrived to a congressional forum hosted by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
