Taxi ploughs into Moscow crowd

Taxi ploughs into crowd of'World Cup fans in Moscow leaving eight injured

Asked if the driver appeared drunk, the witness said: "No, he wasn't drunk". He said several people were injured and received the necessary medical assistance.

The Tass news agency said that two Mexicans, two Russians and one Ukrainian were hospitalised after the crash.

The driver of the taxi has been detained, officials said. It cited the driver as saying he did not drive into the crowd on objective.

Moscow Police have launched criminal investigation into a suspected violation of the traffic code.

The yellow cab had mounted the pavement in Moscow and ploughed straight into a group of pedestrians.

Two Mexican women are among the injured eight who have been taken to hospital, with one still in a serious condition.

Early reports say that Mexico fans are among the injured, as some of those involved were wearing Mexican team colours.

The country is now hosting the World Cup, which kicked off in the Russian capital on Thursday at the Luzhniki Stadium, while the Otkrytie Arena in Moscow played host to Argentina's 1-1 draw with Iceland on the day of the crash.

Russian authorities have promised to host a safe World Cup tournament, which is taking place in 11 cities until 15 July.

The U.S. State Department on Friday updated its travel advice on Russian Federation, saying terrorist groups were plotting attacks.
