United Nations votes by strong majority to condemn Israel over Gaza violence

The 193-member assembly approved the resolution by a vote of 120-8, with 45 nations abstaining.

The U.S. amendment to condemn Hamas, which was voted on first, was approved by a vote of 62-58 with 42 abstentions.

Haley had warned at the time that Washington was "taking names" of countries that supported the resolution.

Canada's ambassador Marc-André Blanchard spoke - in addition to Haley - in favor of the USA amendment before the vote.

The U.N. General Assembly condemned Israel on Wednesday for excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians and asked U.N. chief Antonio Guterres to recommend an "international protection mechanism" for occupied Palestinian territory. The U.S. vetoed that resolution June 1, with Haley calling it "grossly one-sided" for criticizing the use of force by Israel while not mentioning Hamas.

"We had more countries on the right side than the wrong side", she said. "Gaza is an important worldwide matter, but what makes it different and more urgent than conflicts in Nicaragua, Iran, Yemen, Burma or many other desperate places?"

The resolution condemns Israel's government for its excessive, disproportionate, and indiscriminate targeting of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon addresses a United Nations General Assembly meeting at U.N. headquarters in New York, June 13, 2018.

The primary resolution was introduced by representatives in Turkey, on behalf of the Islamic Cooperation, and Algeria, on behalf of the Arab League. "By supporting this resolution, you are empowering Hamas".

"We are asking for a simple thing", Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour told the assembly. "And why should that be offending anyone?" "We want our civilian population to be protected". "Is that a crime to ask for?". The amendment will then be put to a vote followed by the resolution, he said.

The resolution would require the UN Secretary-General to submit a written report within 60 days of its adoption, with recommendations for the establishment of an global protection mechanism for the Palestinian civilian population.

The General Assembly last held a similarly contentious vote on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in December, when it rejected President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the U.S. embassy there. The largest number of deaths occurred on May 14, the day the United States moved its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. According to HRW, since the demonstrations started on March 20, at least 118 people were killed and 3,895 wounded by the Israeli troops, who use live rounds to quell the protests.

Regarding the situation in Gaza, Netanyahu said "Hamas is responsible for the hard situation there, for the loss of life and suffering resulting from the violent riots it has been waging in recent weeks".
