Two men shot, killed in officer-involved shooting in downtown Kansas City

BREAKING One sheriff’s deputy killed another critical after shooting outside Kansas courthouse

The Wyandotte County Sheriff's office has identified the deputy killed after an altercation outside the courthouse this morning as Patrick Rohrer, 35.

Another Wyandotte County deputy who was shot is in critical condition at the University of Kansas Hospital, according to officials. She said during a news conference that it was "very possible" the deputies were shot "with their own firearm" as they were transporting detainees in a gated area behind the courthouse.

Police say that at about 5 p.m. officers went to the scene where two men were fighting over a golf cart and a gun, both died in the subsequent shooting.

Authorities say one of the deputies was killed in the shooting.

"I wasn't there, but if officers are going to use their weapons, it's only in a situation when their lives or the lives of the public are in danger", Colón said.

FOX4 reported that this was the fourth officer-related shooting in the past three years in Kansas City. The building is used for juvenile court, but Blair says it is unknown whether the suspect is a juvenile or an adult.

When the deputies pulled into the parking lot and were ready to transport the inmates, the deputies "were overcome".

The courthouse is located at 710 N Seventh Street.

"Sending prayers to the officers, families and Wyandotte SO", the office said.

The Olathe Police Department, Raymore Police Department in Missouri and the Jackson County Sheriff's Officer in Missouri tweeted similar heartfelt messages. No other information has been released about the deputies or the suspect.

Authorities said it was too early in the investigation to publicly detail how the shootings could have happened.

In 2015, Wyandotte County Deputy Scott Wood was shot seven times but survived.

Police Chief Terry Zeigler said on Twitter that the department is working a major incident but provided no further details.
