Trump Endorses GOP Congressman's Challenger Just Hours Before Polls Close

Trump Blue Wave

Less than three hours before polls closed in SC, U.S. president Donald Trump weighed in on the Palmetto State's first district congressional race between third-term congressman Mark Sanford and his challenger, first term state representative Katie Arrington.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", Trump tweeted.

"He is MIA and nothing but trouble", Trump said. "He is better off in Argentina".

"I am grateful for the President's support", Arrington said in a statement. Kaine, who ran as Hillary Clinton's vice presidential candidate in 2016, has held the seat since 2013.

Although Sanford backed key Republican priorities in Congress such as cutting taxes and healthcare, and has been endorsed by major conservatives groups such as the Club for Growth, he has also been vocal with his criticism of Trump when they have disagreed.

Sanford's seat is likely to remain in Republican hands no matter the victor of Tuesday's primary.

In the wake of the 2016 election of President Donald J. Trump-and the controversies, scandal and investigations that have embroiled the White House and Congress since-Democrats have surged to run for office, including at one time as many as 11 candidates for the seat. She has also established herself as a moderate Democrat with a reputation for working with Trump and Republicans - something that could be seen as an asset by voters in a state that Trump carried by 35 points in 2016. State Sen. Jennifer Wexton is the establishment preference, but veteran Dan Helmer's viral ads - one of which compares the threat Trump poses to Osama bin Laden - have gained some national attention. As voters head into the polls, six Democrats are still competing.

"An analysis today of the Governor's Congressional redistricting map provided to the PA Supreme Court shows that [Democrat] Governor Wolf designed a blatantly partisan map that fails to meet the criteria established by the Court, according to Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25) and House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-28)", Pennsylvania's Republican state legislative leaders said of the new map when it was released in February.

And in the 3rd District, philanthropist Susie Lee is favored in the Democratic primary, while Republicans could choose Danny Tarkanian, the son of the legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, who dropped his Senate bid at the urging of Trump.

Corey Stewart, Nick Freitas and E.W. Jackson are vying for the GOP Senate nomination in what's expected to be a hard year for Republicans.

That's in part due to Virginia's changing demographics, particularly the northern part of the state becoming more dense, more diverse and more progressive.

Incumbent Tim Kaine is running unopposed in the Democratic primary, while there are three Republicans are hoping to challenge him in November.

Fifty-one of the 99 competitive races are in those eight states-California (10), Pennsylvania (9), Florida (7), OH (5), Minnesota (5), New Jersey (5), NY (5), and MI (5). On the Republican side, state Attorney General Adam Laxalt is expected to win.

In North Dakota, Republican Representative Kevin Cramer is the presumptive challenger to Heitkamp, who is in the fight of her career in a state Trump carried by a whopping 36 percentage points. If he fails to top 50%, it would catapult him into a one-on-one runoff.

A recent court decision in one state-Pennsylvania-threw out those old gerrymandered district boundaries and forced new, more Democrat- friendly boundaries onto the state's 19 seats in the House of Representatives, which in turn helped put eight seats now held by Republicans-and only one seat now held by a Democrat-into the "competitive race" category.

In Nevada, the race to replace outgoing Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval features primaries in both parties.

Small business owner and former chief of staff on Capitol Hill Lindsey Davis Stover said her struggle to pay off student debts gives her important perspective. State Attorney General Janet Mills, who like Giunchigliani has the backing of Emily's List, started the race as the front-runner but has faced tough competition from the large field. Scott Hammond and former reporter Michelle Mortensen.
