US ready for North Korea nuclear crisis if talks fail

Kim covered by ‘wall of bodyguards’ strolls Singapore quay before meeting Trump

"Any agreement must instead lead to the dismantling of every aspect of north Korea's nuclear missile program, including the country's sizable fissile material stockpile", she said in a Monday statement, also urging Trump to opt against allowing to Kim to secure commitments about reducing the size of the USA military footprint in the region.

The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting United States president.

The article titled 'Trump and Kim - The meeting the world's been waiting for' also noted one subject that went untouched by other media houses - "What will nearly certainly NOT be talked about is North Korea's human rights record".

Iizuka spoke highly of Trump's promise to include the abduction issue in the summit agenda along with the denuclearization of North Korea, hoping the return of the abductees will be ensured at the U.S.

"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Pompeo said on Monday evening.

Absent a detailed historical record and corroborating witnesses, the president's interlocutor could potentially leave the meeting and misrepresent what transpired, creating a he-said-he-said showdown that could turn into a major headache for the USA leader.

Their first meeting will be just the two men, with their translators, without any advisers present.

"And I don't think either interpreter will be in a position to correct the record if the self-reporting by Kim and Trump doesn't reflect what was actually said in the same manner and tone", said Jenny Town, assistant director of the U.S. -Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

After concluding the summit, Trump planned to speak to reporters in Singapore before flying home, the White House said.

He joined Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who took a selfie, before stopping at the Marina Bay Sands hotel, which resembles a giant surfboard perched on three tall columns, for a look out over the bright lights of the city from its rooftop garden and swimming pool.

While most analysts say the Singapore summit is likely go smoothly, many are skeptical that measurable progress will be made on the issue of denuclearization.

As Trump and Lee sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, the president sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Actually, says another group, there will indeed be disarmament, a peace treaty ending the Korean War and North Korea's emergence as a contributing member of the global community - but just not right now.

He wouldn't say whether Trump would consider withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but insisted US sanctions on the North would remain in place until the North denuclearizes.

Pompeo travelled twice to Pyongyang in recent months to lay the groundwork for Trump's meeting, becoming the most senior member of Trump's team to spend time with Kim face to face.

North Korea had also threatened to strike Guam, an American territory in the Pacific Ocean.

Armed police officers patrol outside the St. Regis Hotel ahead of the U.S. He told reporters, "I will know, just my touch, my feel".

There was speculation throughout the day over whether Kim Jong Un had taken his private jet- an Ilyushin IL-62M - from Pyongyang, but official photos released by the Singaporean Ministry of Communications and Information showing Kim meeting Balakrishnan on the tarmac appear to reveal that he flew to Singapore aboard an Air China Boeing 747.

"I can only say this", Pompeo said.

US President Donald Trump announced he will be leaving Singapore early because the talks had moved "more quickly than expected".

The North has presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to the country's neighbours and the USA as a logical next step and completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent in response to what Pyongyang says is a policy of "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.
