Trump deepens G7 divide with call to readmit Russian Federation

Canadian leaders oppose Trump proposal to reinstate Russia in G7

In the run-up to the G7 summit, Trump continued to rile up his fellow world leaders with accusations of unfair trade practices, provoking angry responses from both Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron, who even suggested that the G7 could fare as the G6, without the U.S. if need be.

The low expectations could allow the leaders to cast any consensus as an achievement, especially given that Trump and most of the other G-7 leaders headed into the meeting appearing ready to fight.

At the annual G7 summit, held this year in Canada, Trump clashed with fellow world leaders over tariffs and trade, and eventually withdrew his endorsement of the group's joint statement.

Aides to the president insist that the president is looking forward to the trip.

Because of these issues and Trump's uncompromising attitude (he did not stay until the end of the meeting and left early for his summit with Kim Jung Un), an agreement could not be reached in Canada. In one picture, while the former USA president is seen engaging in talks with the experts, in the other picture he can be seen sharing a light moment with Angela Merkel with watching the European soccer match.

The French President also condemned Trump over the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying that while it was the choice of the United States to participate in the deal, the USA should not prevent other nations from dealing with it. Yet in a testy phone call with Trudeau, Trump quipped, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812.

Trump is unlikely to back away from the nationalistic policies that have frustrated and unnerved allies but which he sees as key promises to his most loyal voters.

By the time Trump did arrive in Canada, met by a cordon of red-jacketed Mounties, he was well behind schedule, making the meeting impossible. "As the Toronto Star wrote, "(Trump's) erratic, hostile behaviour toward the United States' traditional allies is undermining Washington's credibility around the world".

PM Theresa May in a phone call earlier this week told Trump that the decision by the U.S. to apply tariffs to steel and aluminum imports from the European Union was "unjustified and deeply disappointing". There are differences in styles of diplomacy and views about cooperation and free trade.

"I can not say whether there will be a common statement or just a summary", Merkel said on Friday.

European Council President Donald Tusk, who will attend the meeting of EU leaders, said in the New York Times this week "Europe must now do everything in its power to protect the trans-Atlantic bond, in spite of today's mood". But his stay in Canada was nonetheless cut short by several hours late Thursday evening when the White House said Trump would depart for Singapore on Saturday after a morning session on gender equality. Trump asked. "They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table".
