Pompeo Says U.S. Objective For North Korea Summit Hasn't Changed

Pompeo has maintained that complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization is the "only outcome" acceptable to the USA and that the Trump administration hopes ultimately to reach an agreement with the North Koreans that it can submit to Congress "so that when administrations do change, as they inevitably do, and this one will ... that Chairman Kim will have comfort that American policy will continue down the same path".

Officers combed the city on Sunday, from the old colonial section to the modern skyscrapers to the hotel on nearby Sentosa island where Trump and Kim will actually meet.

Trump and other top USA officials have promised a "bright future" for the North if it quickly relinquishes its nuclear weapons - including economic inducements and a security agreement.

U.S. President Donald Trump smiles in front of a cake during an advanced birthday celebration at his meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the Istana, ahead of a summit between North Korea and the U.S., Singapore, June 11, 2018, in this photo obtained from social media.

Turns out, North Korea's Dear Leader is not staying at the Fullerton Hotel as initially posited by The Washington Post.

At a press conference earlier on Sunday, Loong said that the summit cost approximately $20 million, which is a price the Singapore was "willing to pay". "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

While fighting a trade war with allies, Trump now brings his America First negotiating style to the deadly topic of North Korea's nuclear weapons.

"It's unknown territory, in the truest sense", Trump said during the G-7.

Prime Minister Lee wished Kim a success for the summit and expressed hope that the US-North Korea meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and the larger region.

Al Jazeera's Adrian Brown reports from Singapore. Kim has sought to overhaul his image this year in a bid to ease global sanctions imposed after he tested nuclear bombs and long-range ballistic missiles.

"I think within the first minute I'll know", Trump said.

Trump told reporters in Canada on Saturday any agreement with Kim would be "spur of the moment", underscoring the uncertain outcome of what he called a "mission of peace".

"In this case, what is important is that the summit is being held, and we are hosting it, not extravagantly but with due consideration to costs and making sure operational requirements are met", he said. "It's never going to be there again".
