Fair trade now fool trade, Trump vents anger on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, Trudeau

The G7 nations are Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

Hours after leaving the G7 summit on Saturday, Trump took to Twitter to assault the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" and instructed USA representatives to renege on the US' endorsement of the joint communique. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron entered into a war of words with him about the punitive trade measures, but Trump was unmoved, insisting that the two of them, although allies, had been taking advantage of the trade process for far too long.

He called Mr Trudeau "dishonest & weak" after Mr Trudeau said at a news conference that Canada would retaliate for new U.S. tariffs.

The chancellor also announced during Sunday's interview that, just like Canada, the European Union was also preparing counter-measures to Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

Trade adviser Peter Navarro told "Fox News Sunday" that "there is a special place in hell for any leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy" with Trump. She said that she still believes Trump shares the principled stance of the G7 on "many issues".

Russian President Vladimir Putin wasn't invited to the G-7 summit in Canada, although US President Donald Trump suggested he be readmitted.

Trump agreed to a statement on trade but withdrew from it later.

"Kim must not see American weakness", Kudlow said.

Trudeau said he had told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us".

But "at the same time we need to avoid tit-for-tat escalation" and maintain a constructive dialogue, she said. "Canadians - we're polite, we're reasonable - but we also will not be pushed around".

Merkel said the contentious meeting drives home the point she's made for more than a year: that the European Union needs to stand together to increase its clout on the world stage and that the United States is a less reliable partner.

He will not be attending the second day, as he is all set to leave for Singapore where is scheduled to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un on June 12.

The President's intervention torpedoed an attempt to reassert the group's commitment to free trade and paper over the cracks in the western alliance exposed by Trump's controversial decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Trump tweeted that Trudeau was "very dishonest & weak".

"We need Russian Federation for disarmament talks" and for discussions about both Ukraine and Syria, Merkel said.

"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

The US President addressed the subject of worldwide trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit Saturday, saying that he did not want to see other countries take advantage of the US over trade.
