Dennis Rodman to Travel to Singapore for North Korea Summit

Pompeo appeared to address that sort of North Korean concern on Monday, saying "President Trump recognizes Chairman Kim's desire for security and is prepared to ensure a North Korea free of weapons of mass destruction is also a secure North Korea".

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war previous year amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

North Korea is seeking a security guarantee - possibly including a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War - and the removal of the U.S.'s nuclear umbrella protecting allies South Korea and Japan.

The daylong summit will also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders, the White House said.

But as he embarked for Singapore he changed his tune, calling it a "one-time shot" and adding he will know "within the first minute" whether an agreement will be possible. And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to keep expectations for the summit in check.

Later, Pompeo shared a picture of Trump speaking with the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.

Asked by a reporter how he felt about the summit, Mr Trump said: "Very good".

Sporadic provocations by the North have continued while Pyongyang has made increasing advances in its nuclear arsenal, which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said. He also told Lee the decision to hold the summit in the island city-state of Singapore was "made very consciously" and offered thanks.

"Hi, I'm Kim Yong-chol, the one you blame for sinking the Cheonan."

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations.
