RACE: Vettel wins in Canada to seize championship lead

Canadian Grand Prix - Strategy guide

Vettel says starting on the purple-wall tyres was a straightforward decision to make and hope it'll work out in his favour to win around Canada for the first time since 2013.

There wasn't a happy end to Fernando Alonso's 300th Grand Prix weekend.

Hamilton leads Vettel by 14 points in the standings after six races and will be determined not to allow him to cut substantially into that cushion.

Hamilton is looking to equal Schumacher's record of seven career Canadian GP wins. Max Verstappen was third and the other Red Bull vehicle, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was fourth.

"I think I was a bit in trouble after Friday practice, but I guess I woke up the right way today".

Both took heavy damage in the contact and careened across Turn 6 and into the far barriers, where both their races ended.

The Ferrari driver set a track record with a time of one minute, 10.764 seconds, ahead of Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. "When we got to qualifying, honestly we knew it was going to be very close as it was, but in my heart, I truly feel like we had the pace to lock out the front row, or at least I had the pace to be on the front row". He and Ferrari executed their race to perfection, took the lead in the title race and have left Hamilton and Mercedes with much to consider before racing resumes in France in a fortnight.

"All round they've been doing a slightly better job so we've got to do more".

The semi-permanent track combines long straights with tight chicanes and each team sets up their vehicle to maximize straight line speed, although the cars also need to deliver a good ride over the relatively tall curbs.

"In the race, it all calms down a bit, which is why in general we are always a bit more competitive".

Again, Kimi Raikkonen led the Ferrari charge in second place, but Monaco victor Daniel Ricciardo, who missed a large chunk of FP2 as mechanics rushed to fix a mechanical problem, was able to end the day third. Every single lap I was kind of on the edge just waiting for the power to drop away and disappear. On a track like this when you have to attack kerbs so much it's important you feel at home and have confidence to play around and I think then you can extract a bit more from the auto.

"We were briefly talking about what we wanted to do, trying to figure everything out".
