Ontario election results: populist Doug Ford to become premier

The broad collapse of Liberal support throughout the province meant the party claimed just seven seats. Instead, he'll have to deal with Ford, a bombastic populist who represents the antithesis of pretty much everything Trudeau stands for.

"I'm very grateful to the people of Ontario", Ford said as he left his mother's house Thursday evening on his way to PC election headquarters at the Toronto Congress Centre. Relatively few Tory MPPs in their newly elected caucus have any experience in cabinet (though there are some), and they're quickly going to learn the difference between vague, uncosted electoral promises and the brass-tacks accounting reality that's required of the country's second-largest finance ministry to consume the next four years. An estimated 768,000 have already cast a ballot in the advance polls.

"I had the mail-in ballot but I don't know where I put it", Wrightsman said.

However, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister, a fellow Conservative, injected a note of caution. It can also lead down the rabbit hole of intolerance, an outcome Ford needs to avoid at all costs I. As pluralist a province as Ontario.

The premier had some fine campaign moments - many thought she'd won the debates with her intelligent, grounded performances. "Ontarians have said loud and clear that they reject policies that have led to higher taxes and high energy bills".

If so, they'll be bucking historical trends.

"Vote centers will be open for a minimum of 11 days, up to and including Election Day".

Likewise, one of Canada's biggest anti-abortion organizations issued a statement celebrating the "end of Wynne's reign of terror" and adding they're "optimistic" Ford will "uphold his campaign promises to repeal and replace Kathleen Wynne's radical sex-ed curriculum as an "early priority" in his administration".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Ford to congratulate him and said he looks forward to working with him.

But Liberal MPs' reaction demonstrated the potential for that relationship to quickly sour.

Part of the Ontario PCs' "plan for the people" involves scrapping the province's cap-and-trade carbon-cutting plan, and challenging the federal government's power to impose carbon- pricing measures in lieu of a provincial equivalency plan, such as the carbon tax adopted by British Columbia and Alberta.

Right off the bat I learned I have the right to vote if I'm still in line when the polls close.

As well, Ford's own history and penchant for controversy could bite his federal Conservative cousins, which may explain why Scheer has kept a bit of distance thus far.

Ford, 53, a former city councilor and brother of the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford, ran on a "For the People" platform of tax cuts for businesses and the middle class, along with lower prices for gasoline and electricity. Scheer awkwardly talked about how he's always had compassion for people struggling with substance abuse.

For a few short weeks, Andrea Horwath appeared tantalizingly close to the Ontario premier's office - a prize that proved elusive once again on Thursday for the veteran politician who has led the provincial New Democrats for nearly a decade.

As for NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, the election was a warning that voters are increasingly tolerant of political incorrectness and will embrace a force of bombast over the extreme sensitivity he personifies.
