Deaths of famous by their own hands highlight troubling trend

The report showed an overall 25.4 percent increase nationally during the period with only one state — Nevada — seeing a decrease in its rate

The CDC researchers found that more than half of Americans who died by suicide had not been diagnosed with a mental health condition. While both deaths leave permanent holes in USA - and global - culture, they are an opportunity for a much-needed discussion on suicide prevention.

Julia Payson, Executive Director of the Vernon branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association says it's example the illness doesn't discriminate.

His death comes just a few days after the suicide of fashion designer Kate Spade.

They also say to look at yourself and make sure you're ok too.

In the United State suicides the number of suicides has risen by 25% in the last few years, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

As shown in the map below from the CDC, Nevada is the only state that did not experience an increase in the rate of suicide-though it's still high at an average of 22 per 1,000 during years in the study period.

In addition to mental health conditions and suicide attempts as risk factors, other contributing circumstances include social and economic problems, access to the means to commit suicide, and poor coping and problem-solving skills, the health agency said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Often, warning signs might be disguised and not everyone in that person's life sees them.

Henderson says decreasing these numbers will start by talking about mental health the same way we talk about physical health. In contrast, 12 out of 100,000 people died from suicide in 2012. It's up everywhere. And we know that the rates are actually higher than what's reported.

The study serves as a reminder, she says, that if someone in your life recently lost a job, ended a relationship, or is having some other life crisis, it's important to reach out. Rates ranged from 6.9 per 100,000 in the District of Columbia to 29.2 per 100,000 in Montana.

The report calls on state and local communities, health care providers, and individuals to take steps to prevent suicide.

"One of the statistical things we know is that one of the best things we can do to reduce suicide when we are concerned about people is to continue to wrap around loved ones around them, not necessarily professionals", Walker said.
