Vettel takes pole position at Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying

In addition to three DRS zones there have been a number of changes to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix

"I would say that Mercedes' pace was really fast today", Ricciardo said.

"There will be times where it's probably going to be frustrating but at the end of the day I guess it's in his control".

By qualifying the German was much more competitive and pulled out two impressive laps in Q3 to beat Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas by less than 0.1s, and he suggests the turnaround from yesterday's position is significant.

If Hamilton is to secure what would be a record seventh pole in Canada on Saturday the Briton will have to squeeze more out an engine that is running in its seventh race.

"Even after Monaco we spoke quite a bit after the race, even Monday we spoke a little bit". We don't know what the other cars are doing, so we can not tell our driver "go right, go left".

Both reported that it had been a tough day in the sunshine at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where Dutchman Max Verstappen set the pace for Red Bull, topping the times in both sessions.

Vettel is winless from the last four races but he is now in a strong position to ensure that does not extend to five rounds after edging out Bottas by just eight hundredths of a second. On a track like this when you have to attack kerbs so much it's important you feel at home and have confidence to play around and I think then you can extract a bit more from the auto.

Mercedes, who chose not to introduce their new upgraded power units in Montreal and struggled to extract the best from the "hyper-soft" tyre, saw Hamilton struggle to find the form that has enabled him to dominate in the past.

Vettel ended Q1 on top ahead of the Finn with Hamilton third, but it was tense for McLaren as twice former champion Fernando Alonso squeezed into Q2 at the end in 14th place ahead of team mate Stoffel Vandoorne.

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good auto, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

The Dutch driver has endured a hard start to the season after being involved in incidents at every race so far in the 2018 season.

"I'm getting really exhausted of all the questions", said the 20-year-old, who has fewer than half the points of Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo ahead of Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

It was the second time this season Verstappen has failed to finish.

And then a quick new track record for Vettel, knocking spots off the Mercedes with 1:10.776.
