Kate Spade's husband says she suffered from depression

Kate Spade committed suicide after husband sought divorce

In an email to the Kansas City Star, Reta Saffo detailed her multiple attempts to get Spade into treatment but said her sister refused, anxious about what people would think of her.

Spade's death on Tuesday in her New York Park Avenue apartment, "was not unexpected by me", the designer's older sister, Reta Saffo, told the Kansas City Star, the paper of the Missouri city where Spade grew up.

Actress Rachel Brosnahan thinks her aunt Kate Spade would want to be remembered as the kind of person who would dance to the song of a mariachi band with a big smile on her face.

Kate Spade was seeing doctors and taking medicine for her disease, Andy Spade said in a statement released Wednesday.

He said her death was a "complete shock". And it clearly wasn't her. After multiple attempts to help her sister Saffo said she finally "let go", adding, "sometimes you simply can not SAVE people from themselves!"

Kate's sister and husband say that she had been suffering from mental illness for years, and Andy admits that they had been living apart for 10 months.

"We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce", he added. "So, Andy [her husband and David Spade's brother] and I were out, honestly, at a Mexican restaurant and he just said, what about handbags?" she said.

"We worked together at a clothing store, and I was on the women's side".

In his statement, Andy Spade described his wife as "the most attractive woman in the world". Bea was living with both of us and we saw each other or spoke every day.

"I have yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media", his statement reads, before asking for privacy for the couple's daughter. "Thank you, Kate, from one of the millions you made feel handsome", she added.

But shortly after Frances Beatrix's birth in 2005, the couple sold Kate Spade New York to concentrate on raising their daughter. The family continued to eat meals and take vacations together, he said. He said he had dinner with her a week before her death, and "she was still talking very much about the future and collaborating with Andy on projects for Frances Valentine".

Andy told the cops that Kate "was drinking a lot", and was depressed by business problems and their separation. Anything else that is out there right now is false. There were no business problems.

"Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos".
