Texas man bitten by severed rattlesnake head

The man beheaded it with a shovel but he soon found out how dangerous a dead snake can

A South Texas man nearly died after he was bitten by the head of a rattlesnake he'd just decapitated.

Her husband severed its head with a gardening tool. Upon spotting a four-foot rattlesnake, the man (unnamed in media reports) severed its head with a shovel.

After the snake released its venom, he experienced loss of vision, in addition to the bleeding and seizures, and had to be flown to hospital by helicopter.

'He had to have 26 doses'.

The 28-year-old man, from Anderson, was kayaking along the Edisto River when the snake struck, biting him a number of times and leaving him in need of urgent medical treatment, ABC News 4 reported. Instead, the Oklahoma State Department of Health recommends getting a description of the snake and its markings.

More than a week later, the man is in stable condition, but still showing signs of weakened kidney function due to the shocking bite.

Doctors initially told Sutcliffe that her husband may not make it despite the large amounts of anti-venom they were giving him.

He was eventually airlifted to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital, Jennifer said.

"A normal person who is going to get bit is going to get two to four doses of anti-venom", the wife said.

While Jennifer said she was scared too, she tried to stay positive. He's now in stable condition.

A man in Texas has almost died after being bitten by a snake that he had just beheaded with a shovel.

In the movies, people try to suck out the venom themselves or some other home remedy.

A rattlesnake can still bite and release venom after its death because of a reflex action.
