Facebook glitch shared 14 million users' private posts publicly

Well shucks

The company said on Thursday the bug automatically suggested that users make new posts public, even if they had previously restricted to "friends only" or another private setting.

Facebook, which has 2.2 billion users, says the bug was active from May 18 until May 27. "We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Erin Egan, chief privacy officer of Facebook, told Fox News. Facebook will soon start individually informing the people who were affected by the bug.

Facebook just can't get it together as we learn about another major privacy breach on their platform.

The bug apparently happened because Facebook was building a new "featured items" option that highlights content on profiles.

Normally, a new post will default to whichever setting was selected for the previous one, but in this case all new messages automatically went to public. Facebook will also flag for the user which posts they shared between May 18 and May 27, and will show them what the privacy setting was on that post. And while the bug was only in effect for a few days, it's an example of how many different settings users have to be aware of on Facebook.

While many phone makers have said any data pulled through those channels only resided on phones, not on company servers, some critics have questioned how certain Facebook can be that those statements are true. It's admitting the mistake itself, doing so promptly, and proactively notifying anyone who is affected.

Over the past few days, Facebook has been under scrutiny for giving Chinese company Huawei access to users' data, even though the US government has held that company under suspicion in the past over its ties to the country's communist government.

The company boasts it can "find your voters and move them to action" through data-driven campaigns and a team that includes data scientists and behavioural psychologists.

This meant the company was able to mine the information of 87 million Facebook users even though just 270,000 people gave them permission to do so.
